5 Essential Details to Consider When Redesigning Your Kitchen

Updated: Feb 17

Okay so recently, my client purchased his home this past October. He had absolutely no idea what he was getting himself into, but, knew that he wanted to completely remodel his home. With no concept in mind, and no exact budget, he gave me free rein to just “modernize it”. Ultimately, we decided on a more modern-contemporary style for his space. This property built in 2005, serves a really nice foundation but, certainly in need of some updating throughout. With no rush on completing the property, we decided to take it one space at a time, after the major renovations where complete.

I wanted to start with one of the main focal points of the home, the kitchen. His home makes for a great open space, entertaining, and plenty of natural lighting. We began with a full interior paint job, choosing the world famous Repose Grey by Sherwin Williams, and luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout.

Cabinetry Paint & Countertops

For the kitchen cabinets, originally oak, I chose to do a two-tone color combination for paint. We went with Sherwin Williams, Iron Ore for the kitchen island, and bottom cabinets. For the top cabinets, we kept it simple and went with SW,Pure White. Once the paint was complete, I ending up choosing a Rainforest Calcutta Quartz for the countertops. That decision was like chefs kiss. It instantly, became the statement piece of the kitchen. The countertops and base cabinets color combination were certainly one for the books. The Iron Ore played off so well of the smoky charcoal veins within the quartz.

Sink Hardware & Accessories

Now on to the the hardware decisions. I am always an open airy, fresh, clean type of girl, but I wanted to add a bit of pizzazz to this Iron Ore. To make it pop, I decided to go with all brushed gold hardware pieces. Now gold can be tricky, and takes a bit of careful planning. Check out my article on “Choosing The Right Gold’s”.

Prior to the countertops being installed, I of course had to make a decision on the sink design since different stones require an undermounted sink. Once I chose brushed gold as the hardware color, I knew we had to do a brushed gold sink to really set the tone. This sink was a moderately priced undermount and a perfect add on to the design.

Pro Tip: If you are installing a garbage disposal, make sure you have all the correct gold kitchen sink accessories for the drains and garbage disposal switch. Most stores only keep silver in stock, and I highly would recommend not doing a gold sink with silver drain accessories.

For the kitchen faucet, I fell in love with Kohler’s Setra Single Handle faucet & soap dispenser. The color states its a brushed brass gold, but, no worries it complimented the sink and accessories perfectly. My client also went with having a filtered water system installed, so of course we had to choose a brushed gold water faucet to match. I added an air switch for the garbage disposal to keep it modern.

Construction Note: Please be mindful when installing countertops, any sink fixtures & hardware will need to be cut out through the stone, for proper placement. Having the exact dimensions of each fixture, helps your installer tremendously.

Cabinet Hardware

The cabinet hardware was a fun selection as I love a good amazon find. I went with these three inch cup cabinet pulls, ordering two packs of five to suite the kitchen. For the knobs, I chose these brushed gold knobs. Both sets are nice and edgy, with a slight masculine feel for this single bachelor.

The Final Score

Overall, this kitchen came out absolutely stunning. A 5 out of 5 in my book. Maybe a 10 out of 5 once decor is complete. Feel free to comment below on this kitchen haul. Also, checkout the before and after photos, and share your ratings.
